Marathon Fever

7 Nov

Today is the NYC Marathon. For the last month, I have seen billboards, posters, and cut-outs of runners–strong, fierce, AMAZING runners.

(Photo: Lolo Jones. Because she is awesome :D)

Coincidently–ok, probably not coincidently–I started running again. It’s been a while (ok, a long while…) since I was last running on a regular basis. So, it was no surprise that I was really slow at first… but now I’m getting faster and going farther. I’m on my fourth successful week of keeping up with it. Yesterday was a 12 mile run on the Hudson River. 12?! YUP 😀 Woot woot!

On most days, I run along the Hudson River. I love the view, the breeze, and the smell of the water. Whether it reminds me of my hometown beach or the ocean in the summer, I’m not sure. In any case, running along the river feels like I’ve left Manhattan and gone on a quick vacation. Granted, there’s a little more sweat than I’d expect on a vacation… 😀

Anyway, back to the marathon! Once I get some work done, I plan to go see the 45,000 runners on the course in Central Park.

I’ll remember to bring my camera and catch a celeb (or who knows, maybe the Subway guy?) on film for you 😀 Or, if we’re lucky, maybe one of these running titans, a.k.a. inspirational bloggers, will pass by me:

Smile In Your Liver

19 Aug

Tonight I gave my body a rest from 31 Days of Yoga. Too many hours spent yoga-ing and packing over the past couple of nights have made me exhausted! What better way to sit back and relax than to see Eat Pray Love 😀

I absolutely loved Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel, so it was a treat to see all the details fleshed out in film. Italy, India, and Bali (and don’t forget Manhattan :D) are such beautiful places. I felt like I was on vacation for two hours 😀

The above picture features Elizabeth Gilbert and Ketut, the medicine man in Bali. My favorite line, of course, was Ketut’s:

Why they always look so serious in yoga? You make serious face like this, you scare away good energy. To meditate, only you must smile. Smile with face, smile with mind, and good energy will come to you and clear away dirty energy. Even smile in your liver.

Ketut’s message is closely related to the reason I started this blog. Smiling not only proves that someone is happy, but it also creates happiness. That is a killer combination 😀

So, smile in your liver… hmm, new blog name? Maybe 😀

Smile out loud (in your liver),

All Things Good

5 Aug

Today after work, I stopped by J.Crew (confession: nothing is good there right now), lululemon (confession: everything is good there right now), and got a (much-needed) pretty pink manicure 😀 Afterwards, I walked through the Union Square farmers market just in time for closing and picked up some gorgeous sunflowers. Now, my apartment feels like this:

How’s that for positive energy 😀 To keep the good stuff coming, I had some turbo salad (blueberries + kale + sunflower seeds+ pomengranate dressing= perfection). Then, I walked to yoga class. Or, to be more accurate, I sprinted like I was running 20 minutes late (oh wait, I was) and got there a full 60 seconds early 😀

Update: Project 31 Days of Yoga is still on track 😀 Well, it may have gone slightly off track on Day 2, when I fell asleep instead of doing a yoga to the people podcast class… but I did two classes in a row yesterday with friends, so no worries!

Now, I’m (supposed to be) cleaning my apartment because friends from home are staying with me this weekend 😀 Oh, by the way, I despise cleaning… even more than laundry! I suppose it would be slightly more bearable, however, if I had one of these sweet suits:

Attractive, right? 😀 Anyway, tomorrow night I’m trying anti-gravity yoga for the first time! I am SO excited. It will be my first time in a yoga hammock! I keep thinking, it’s just a hammock– how hard could it be?

We will find out the answer to that question tomorrow 😀 Gnite, lovelies!

Long Beach and Upside-Down Yoga

1 Aug

Yesterday, I went to Long Beach with friends. My first time to Long Island! I loved it–exhibit A is below 😀

Perfect beach weather + perfectly ripe cherries = BLISS 😀 I was such a happy camper, especially to be out of Manhattan on a hot, humid day… anyway…

Lately, I’ve been dying to do yoga that looks like this:
I don’t know what type of yoga this is called or where I can find a studio, but if anyone knows, please tell me!

Also, big news: I decided to do 31 days of yoga for the month of August! I knocked off day 1 with candlelit class tonight, but tomorrow already looks busy (Read: season finale of the bachelorette. Don’t judge :D). Perhaps day 2 will be a podcast-class kind of day…

Too Busy for Dinner? RUH-ROH!

27 Jul

It’s been a busy couple of days! Yesterday, I had to go to a networking night at Battery Gardens, and it was probably the first time I’ve been to one of these things without hating it. Usually I dread walking into a room full of unfamiliar faces, but I might have even (gulp) liked it last night? Maybe because it was BEAUTIFUL (note: photo taken on different day):

Can you see the water through the windows? Don’t worry, I got you covered:

If Manhattan is an island, how come I don’t see the water very often? Hmm, gotta fix that…

The only bad part of the night was that I forgot to get dinner before I left. FAIL FAIL FAIL. Meeting too many people and making small talk for a few hours is hard enough without trying to flag down the waiters, so I just gave up. By the time I got home, my stomach was ready to kill me :/ Dear Self, I have learned my lesson!!

Tonight, I saw Million Dollar Quartet on Broadway! It’s about Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins. Here’s a quick glamour shot of the stars:

The Elvis actor SERIOUSLY looked like Elvis! And sounded like him too–not that I’m old enough to know for sure… whatever 😀 Awesome music=so much fun=I hope you all get to go at some point!

When I’ve finally gotten to my apartment these past couple of nights, I’ve felt wicked (I’m from Massachusetts, get used it it :D) tired. So, before I fall asleep on the keyboard (you think I’m joking– I’m not, lol), gnite & enjoy your tomorrows 😀

Adrenaline Rush!

25 Jul

I LOVE a good rush of ADRENALINE. The feeling it gives me has no equivalent in my day to day life. I gotta find a way to fix that. Any suggestions?

Instead of going to the office yesterday, our whole firm went on a summer outing to a lakehouse. The highlight of my day was swinging off a rope 40 feet in air and jumping into the lake. I surprised myself by involuntarily screaming when I was swinging full throttle through the air (me: no back-up plan?!) Talk about free fallin’ 😀

Before the tree jump, I went waterskiing AND FINALLY STOOD UP! I’ve done (or attempted) waterskiing before but with, err, difficulty. I attribute my increased upper body and core strength to vinyasa 😀

Other activities I did today that I can officially cross off my to do list include  a full body massage, a water trampoline, and going 90 mph on a motorboat (I was clinging onto the side of the boat because I (obviously) gave my boss the last seat).

As for the lakehouse itself, the architecture and interior design were fantastic. It had a real movie theater, infinity pool (the disappearing edge went into the lake–total showstopper), huge glass table set on a piece of driftwood (I want one!), wooden floors painted white (gave the whole house a tranquil feeling), and a yoga studio (no big deal). Basically, I’m ready to move in 😀

And the food? AMAZING. My two favorite dishes were some sort of uncooked peach and tomato concoction, and sweet pea soup. I promise to post these recipes on SOL soon!

Anyways, a quick getaway and a bit of adrenaline are exactly what I need sometimes. Next up, I’m thinking jetskis, white water rafting, ziplining (!), trapezing (ala Carrie on that one Sex and the City episode), and… whatever comes my way 😀

So, I’m decorating my bedroom…

21 Jul

I want to give it a sense of beauty that’s casual and elegant, fresh and traditional, simple and ornate, plain and patterned, rumpled and tidy. It should be a place of bliss and luxury for total relaxation. I’m envisioning a minimalist design with whites and pastels (read: baby pink). Inspiration comes from the ever-lovely Rachel Ashwell:

I’ll be looking first for a few big things (rug, curtains, pillow) and then the less important things (chairs, mirror, vases).

Do you like any of these pictures? Do you have other ideas? I would love to hear your input, as always 😀

Lightin’ the fire under my tail!

18 Jul

For this school year, I am implementing a few weekly traditions that I hope will keep me sane(r).

Sunday: Make brunch, buy fresh flowers for the apartment, and go to candlelit yoga. That’s my idea of a good start to the week 😀

Monday: Run along the river/reservoir/any semblance of nature I can find in Manhattan. (No, that’s not me in the picture. If you ever see me running with a dog, instead of running from a dog, well, you should take a picture (fast).)

Tuesday: Read something that does not have the words math or economics textbook in the title.

Wednesday: Grocery shopping (ugh… but it must be done. If Angelina can do it, I can do it! Or, if that motivation fails, at least it’s not laundry :D).

Thursday: Host dinner for friends (and include one food that I’ve never tried before).

Friday: Yoga in St. Mark’s.

Saturday: Digital black-out day, meaning no laptop or blackberry. (How I will resist the flashing red light of death that indicates a new email, I have yet to determine… 😀 )

Do you have any weekly traditions that increase your quality of life?

I believe in finding, taking, and creating opportunities.

I believe in identifying exactly what you want and then doing everything in your power to get it.

I believe in expressing gratitude and expressing yourself.

I  believe in asking questions until you understand.

I (finally) believe plastic (especially in microwaves) will hurt us later.

I believe I am blessed and thus have been very lucky so far.

I believe in smiling and I believe in laughing.

I  believe family is so important.

I believe I have incredible, incredible friends.

I believe that you have to love yourself before you can feel the love of others.

I believe food should be used for nourishment and that you should handle your body with compassion.

I believe settling is unacceptable, because we can offer ourselves and others more than we can imagine.

A big shout-out to Angela for starting this!

I want to read this everyday.

Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. Look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. Think only of the best, and expect only the best. Forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. Give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. Live in the faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you 😀
